Subang Jaya, What to see and do
Part of the border which surrounds the city proper, the suburb of Subang Jaya nuzzles next to the inner enclave that is Kuala Lumpur alongside the handful of similar satellite towns of Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Klang, Ampang, Kajang, and Klang. Establishing the metropolis that is the Klang Valley, the conglomerate of residential, commercial, and industrial addresses are often referred to as ‘seksyen’ by the locals.
Carved out of a plantation formerly called the Seafield Estate, the Sime Darby darling flourished under its property development programme which received acclaim via the real estate prize of the FIABCI International Prix d’Excellence Award in 1995. Commanding an area of 70sqkm and ranked fifth on the most-populous cities in the country, the local’s ‘Subang’ is a self-contained township which earned its badge when it emerged out of Petaling Jaya’s shadow as a hub of leisure and education to the south of the city.
Accommodating the burgeoning populace of the Northern SS12-SS19, Southern USJ and USJ1-USJ15, and Bandar Sunway, the district’s plethora of shopping malls include the record-listing Sunway Pyramid, which joins Malaysia’s top ten largest malls in the world. Housing a world-class skating rink, a direct link to famed Sunway Lagoon water and theme park, and Sphinx mascot which overlooks the mass of approaching patrons, the Egyptian-themed host tops the choice of Malaysian shoppers via a recent poll by the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board.
Staying true to the Truly Malaysian flavour, Subang Jaya is also a melting cooking pot of culinary adventure, with Asia Café as a base for quick hawker fare, before one launches into a patty party, Japanese bento, or Middle Eastern feast at SS15. Gratifying the coffee-lover in you, the neighbouring USJ Taipan beckons for a nightcap at one of the cafes which offer selections that range from premium brews to good old kopitiam concoction.
