11-year-old Alfonsus Baking lives in Kampung Kelobaan, in the district of Tuaran, Sabah. This is his story:

Alfonsus travels on foot for at least two and a half hours to reach his school. He starts off his excursion before 5am with his neighbours, and their friends from other villages join them along the way.

Many of them are forced to walk through the hilly terrains on an empty stomach because there is simply not enough food in the family. Parents often lack the resources to provide a warm cup of hot Milo or some bread to their children every morning.

Alfonsus, like many indigenous children in Sabah share this similar story. Their attendance in school is dictated by the weather and their physical capabilities. Without good nutrition, a malnourished child would become stunted, underweight, vulnerable to diseases, as well as intellectually and physically impaired. Even if they have a strong will to learn, malnourishment would affect their learning abilities and academic performances.

Asrama Desa Pukak was established in 2008 by Pusat Kebajikan Good Shepherd (PKGS), a local non-governmental organisation that is a partner of World Vision Malaysia. It serves to accommodate 30 children from remote rural villages surrounding Pukak. Besides supervising their schoolwork, PKGS also provides nutritious food to the children and train them at living skills.

Alfonsus and his two younger sisters, Beatrice Baking (10 years old) and Junily Deatly Baking (7 years old), are currently staying at Asrama Desa Pukak to attend school on a regular basis and spend the weekends back home with their parents and other siblings.

Alfonsus’ father Jude Baking Sangkir is grateful that his children have more time to rest and focus on their studies.

World Vision is committed to helping needy communities improve their life conditions as well as to find sustainable solutions for families and their future generations. They strive to change lives and bring hope to children like Alfonsus and their families.

This is just one family’s life changed for the better. There are many more that need your help. Give nourishment to children and their families. Donate today.
