Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements of song, dance, and ritualized combat centred around a physical game called Jogo de Capoeira. Like two police officers in a donut shop, players dance around each other in the centre of a circle, exchanging graceful acrobatic attack and defence in a constant, heart-pumping flow, all the while purposefully avoiding physical contact. The spectators around the circle play a variety of traditional Brazilian instruments and sing, setting the pace and beat of the dance-fight.

Led by Monitor Saracura from AU Capoeira – who has been training under Brazilian tutelage since he was 17 – every one-hour-forty-five-minute session begins with warm-ups and stretches that loosen the body for a cramp-free kickabout. While mastering limb lending techniques such as semi-spinning kicks, full-spinning kicks, frontal kicks and hand stands, students will also embrace the music, history and philosophy of the art. Capoeira encourages cross-culture interaction between students, whether it’s to learn the Brazilian cartwheel, or how to order poached eggs in Portuguese.

Students are advised to wear sports attire such as track bottoms and long pants. A bottle of water keeps fighters from shrinking, and a small towel or beach blanket comes in handy depending on the velocity of the sweat gland. Three class slots (see below) supply convenience for working folks even, but once chosen, participants will have to stick to that same day throughout the eight weeks. Each class is limited to 30 students. For the full Groupon experience, participants are encouraged to attend all classes as the syllabus has been structured for easy step-by-step learning.

Capoeira is a full-body workout requiring intensive endurance and cardio training. Individuals with chronic health conditions should avoid this activity.
