In the three-hour basic Mandarin class, students learn to identify and understand the four tones before mastering 20 common phrases for self-introductions and for use in restaurants. Besides increasing linguistic repertoires, non-Chinese folk explore unspoken tongues to bedazzle Tai Chi teachers, while bashful bananas relinquish roles as dynasty destroyers during rendezvous with Mandarin-speaking relatives. Pre-Chinese speakers should dress comfortably and bring a notebook and stationery to take down notes or draw doodles. A tea spread of assorted Chinese treats and desserts will also be served before or after classes.
