While recycling is lauded as a noble deed in this eco-challenged era and should be practiced daily, a gastronomical intervention is highly necessary when the recycling bin consists of mostly fast-food receipts and nothing else. Today’s Groupon puts forgotten kitchen toys to play: for RM68, you get a voucher worth RM150 good for cooking and baking workshops, from The Cooking House in Desa Sri Hartamas, suitable for both beginners and experienced cooks.

Since 2006, The Cooking House has transformed kitchen virgins into dare-devil utensil jugglers with its variety of hands-on workshops and cooking demonstrations, which allow students to question gurus on stove secrets and everything in between.  During every 3- to 4-hour lesson, professional chefs with up to 15 years of experience working in hotel restaurants, authoring cook books or manning their own kitchens – including the occasional visiting celebrity chefs like Bobby Chinn – train participants in the arts of slicing, dicing, frying and sautéing cuisines good enough to please perusing palates from Italy, Japan, Korea, Thailand and more. Sweet-tooths nibble through breads, chocolates, cakes and pastries as they learn to fold flour into culinary origami, and students get to take home the recipes to repeat their success. Safety and hygiene briefings before each lesson ensure a worry free culinary experience for aspiring chefs. While the school provides the necessary equipment for hands-on workshops, participants need to bring their own containers for takeaways.

Customers can select from an assortment of hands-on or demo-styled classes from now till September 2011, and class schedules are updated monthly. April is filled with tablespoons of coffee and tea appreciation guides, cupcake cuppings, fettuccini flings, seafood fishing, hot teppanyaki grills and local delicacies. Most classes are priced at RM150, but kitchen apprentices may use this Groupon for pricier workshops and pay the difference directly to The Cooking House. Each class accommodates between 20 to 35 students, and participants are encouraged to make bookings early.
