Today’s Groupon lets you experience smooth predator-deflecting moves without getting wet or bitten: for RM38, you get four introductory classes of Latin dance (RM100 value) taught by a professional instructor at The Dance Space in Plaza Damas, Sri Hartamas.

The friendly team at The Dance Space sets feet a flutter over lacquered flooring to the melodious arms of passionate hip-swaying Latin music. During each hour long class, zealous dance Padawans learn the basics of beat counting, footwork, the art of dancing alone and with a partner, as well as how to differentiate salsa from chilli sauce. White chest-baring flair shirts and peacock feather toga gowns are reserved for tournaments, and participants are encouraged to don comfortable attire that do not restrict movements. Ladies wear heels with straps and gentlemen side step in smooth-sole shoes to avoid accidents caused by friction or two left feet.

The studio was co-founded in November 2002 by veteran Latin dancers, Peter Ong and Lavinie Thiruchelvam who have both won many awards to date, such as the 1998 British National Champions in the Dancesport Latin category. Peter coached Team DanceSport Malaysia which competed in the 2007 SEA Games and the Asian Indoor Games held in Thailand where the team took home the bronze medal. Both Lavinie and Peter have also judged, choreographed and mentored on reality shows such as the Rexona No Sweat Dance Challenge, Nescafe Kickstart and So You Think You Can Dance Malaysia.
